This week, both Year 4 classes had the wonderful opportunity to do some volunteering, in collaboration with TimeGivers, at Ellesmere House Care Home (Class 4A) and George Potter Care Home (Class 4C). Our girls enjoyed an eye-opening afternoon with some elderly people carrying out a lovely arts and crafts activity, which consisted of decorating Christmas baubles and making remembrance poppies. Their works of art were generously donated by the girls to the care homes to be displayed. Both Miss Adams and Mr Cilveti felt so immensely proud of how the girls interacted with the elderly people, understanding the context and their personal situations and accordingly adapting their behaviour and communication skills to spend a lovely time with these people whose vast life experience just fascinated our girls. – Mr Cilveti, Year 4 Class Teacher

“On Wednesday afternoon, we went to a care home to visit some elderly people. All of us made baubles for them. They were very kind and welcoming to us. Afterwards, we also made some poppies. They appreciated us so much. We had a wonderful time with the elderly people.” – Helena, Year 4C Form Captain

“This week, we went to Ellesmere House, which is a care home nearby. We split into different groups and went to different tables. First, we made lavender bags with string and donated charity clothes. Then, we made poppies out of red tissue paper and green pipe cleaners. It was wonderful to spend time with people of all ages.” – Milly, Year 4A Form Captain

Here are some highlights from our two visits sent by TimeGivers:
  • A husband visiting his wife at Ellesmere House said, “It’s so lovely to see her smile like this,” as the students gifted her the lavender bags and poppies they made.
  • Another resident from Ellesmere House, when asked if she liked lavender, responded with a smile: “No, but I like that they are making it for me!”
  • “The residents thoroughly enjoyed the visit and were truly uplifted by the enthusiasm, kindness, and creativity your students shared.” – George Potter House staff
  • “Your visit has made a lasting impact here, and we’re incredibly grateful for the time and effort you put into making it so meaningful.” – George Potter House staff
