As the Autumn Term begins (how the time has flown by!), there will be lots of excitement for both prep school children and parents around starting school.

Understandably there may be some nerves and a degree of trepidation, particularly for Reception children and their families as they begin this next important chapter. By following the tips below, we can help ensure the transition is smooth and children throughout London feel prepared and excited to join their classmates in their new 4+ Reception class on their first day of school. Soon the nerves will be but a mere memory as they settle in, enjoy the many wonders of prep school and make friends for life.

Rest assured that they are joining nurturing and supportive communities at girls’ Prep Schools throughout London. At Francis Holland Prep in particular, every pupil is known, loved, valued and heard. They are supported by our close-knit structure as a two-form entry school, with warm, dedicated and talented teachers and teaching assistants in each class.

School must be a happy place where your daughter’s natural curiosity is ignited, nurtured and nourished; where she runs into school every day in eager anticipation of interesting lessons, taught by inspiring teachers.

At the start of this new term, we’ve highlighted some top tips for parents to ensure the transition is a happy and successful experience:

  • Be positive and soothe concerns – Perhaps share your memories of your school days. You might also like to read books with your daughter about starting school. It is also important to listen and soothe feelings of anxiety.
  • Run through the new daily routine – Explain that the school day will be longer than at nursery with possibly an earlier start in the morning.
  • Encourage your daughter to get changed in and out of her school uniform and PE kit. It’s also a good idea to practise taking shoes on and off and fastening them.
  • Label all uniform and school equipment in advance – It’s always easier to reunite missing uniform with our pupils when labelled!
  • Plan nice days around the start of term and ensure your daughter has a relaxing bedtime routine – a warm bath, story or quiet activity such as colouring is a good way to wind down.
  • The first day can be emotional for the whole family – Stay positive, keep goodbyes brief and be prepared for your daughter to be tired in the first weeks.

At Francis Holland Prep, we firmly believe that the happiness and well-being of each child is essential to brilliant learning and Mrs Dixon, along with her team of dedicated and experienced teachers, are always available to discuss any concerns you may have.

What really sets Francis Holland Prep apart is outstanding pastoral care and a strong sense of community, both of which ensure that every child feels known, loved and, as a result, free to achieve extraordinary things. All pupils are supported throughout their time at the school by a comprehensive programme of wellbeing which builds resilience, confidence and character.

The Prep is a unique community that fosters an awareness of the needs of others and a desire to make a difference. Girls are encouraged to be brave and have a go, no matter how great the challenges before them. They learn to debate with gusto, reflect on the world around them with empathy, solve problems creatively, and appreciate the bigger picture.
