On Monday the Prep School journeyed down the King’s Road to join the Senior School at our Graham Terrace site in order to mark Remembrance Day together. We were joined by two guests from the Royal Hospital Chelsea, who read to us from Laurence Binyon’s 1914 poem, For the Fallen. Following the service, the Chelsea Pensioners spent a lesson with Years 5 and 6, giving them an insight into the history of the Royal Hospital and the modern day life of a Chelsea Pensioner. During our Act of Remembrance, I was delighted to be wearing a special stole, created as part of a Francis Holland Prep community art project: many of our pupils had made beautiful fabric poppies which were stitched onto the stole. I was particularly touched to discover that Sophia in Year 3 had made her poppy using a jumper that had belonged to her Great Grandmother, Veronica Walker (1923-2017). Veronica had been in the Women’s Royal Air Force. Thank you Sophia, and to all those who took part in the Remembrance stole project.
